A Portrait of Yo Mama as a Salt Contributor

SALT: Hey, thank you.

KR: I never know how to answer this. I feel like, you know, Indiana was a big influence on me. I do feel like Chris Farley was a big influence on me, but you watch him and you've got to be picking up as much neuroses as you are light-hearted comedy.

AB: When I first started writing what you could call humor pieces in high school and college, I didn't read any Woody Allen pieces and I had never seen a Woody Allen movie. I was kind of afraid to read his stuff because I thought he was this looming figure and it would somehow overly influence what I did. Then I realized I was being a complete idiot because, of course, I had already been influenced by what he had done without even having read it or seen it directly.

KR: We are careful, to a certain extent, what we put in our brains. While we were writing the book, neither of us wanted to read "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" because we didn't want to start to parody it in any way.

AB: It's a self-delusion that you're actually creating original material and that doing that is even possible. That's what I think. But maybe that's too cynical. What I should say instead of that is the self-delusion that you can create something completely original, which is an absurd idea.

SALT: What are you both working on next?

AB: I've been working on a screenplay with my brother.

KR: Well, I've got this novel in the works tentatively titled "Events Surrounding the Creation of The Nicholas Butters Somewhat Disorganized Library." The other thing, which is an ongoing thing, and which you, Paul, actually contribute to, is Kent.

SALT: Full disclosure. I am a proud contributor to Kent.

KR: Which is at http://www.kentroberts.net.
SALT: Is it going to be online?

AB: He's lying.

KR: No, it is. Yeah, it is.

AB: Oh, it's up now?

KR: It should be up by the time this gets published.

SALT: Okay, then. Gentlemen, good luck with your book.

AB: Thank you.

KR: Yeah, man.

AB: Should we tell him our website as well?

KR: Oh, yeah. http://www.portraitofyomoma.com. The site's up now, and on Mother's Day-

AB: There'll be something special.

KR: It's a very special glimpse into the life of Yo Mama.
