KR: I never know how to answer this. I feel like, you know, Indiana was a big influence on me. I do feel like Chris Farley was a big influence on me, but you watch him and you've got to be picking up as much neuroses as you are light-hearted comedy. AB: When I first started writing what you could call humor pieces in high school and college, I didn't read any Woody Allen pieces and I had never seen a Woody Allen movie. I was kind of afraid to read his stuff because I thought he was this looming figure and it would somehow overly influence what I did. Then I realized I was being a complete idiot because, of course, I had already been influenced by what he had done without even having read it or seen it directly. KR: We are careful, to a certain extent, what we put in our brains. While we were writing the book, neither of us wanted to read "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" because we didn't want to start to parody it in any way. AB: It's a self-delusion that you're actually creating original material and that doing that is even possible. That's what I think. But maybe that's too cynical. What I should say instead of that is the self-delusion that you can create something completely original, which is an absurd idea. SALT: What are you both working on next? AB: I've been working on a screenplay with my brother. KR: Well, I've got this novel in the works tentatively titled "Events Surrounding the Creation of The Nicholas Butters Somewhat Disorganized Library."
